András Kapitány – János Megyik: one:one
4 October – 5 November 2005
A project of the Budapest Month of Architecture 2005
The collaborative exhibition of János Megyik and András Kapitány, entitled one-one, examines the relationship between architecture and visual art. The two artists, taking visual art as their starting point, propose the rethinking of artistic boundaries and, with their exhibited works, they also indicate the interplay of positive and negative forms, the development of the relationship between mass and structure, the question of the complex order of surface-formation and networks, and the potential for the reading of the works as examined from the new, architectural context.
The governing notion of the exhibition of András Kapitány and János Megyik is the question of building as sculpture, and sculpture as building.
At the focal point of the show is János Megyik’s plan for the portal of the Life Sciences Building and Library of Debrecen University. The 15 metre work was produced for the exhibition with one to one detail, and it is featured with photography and drawings of it. The drawings are studies for the portal, as well as previous compositions that signified the point of departure for the work at its inception.
The works of András Kapitány, black and white graphics and 3D computer prints, in spite of their small dimensions and restraint, transmit an expressive vision. We see in the images fictive “houses”, sliding into each other, turning into each other, deconstructed spaces, with references to classical and contemporary art. The artist investigates the phenomenon of the manner in which an architectural construction can be transformed into a sculpture in the virtual space.
One plus one author, one plus one approach toward a solution of visual art of shifting scale, inspired by architecture. And that which is beyond the common search for the problem and the connection between architecture and visual art links the works: the drawing itself, the most elementary tool of art and creative thinking.
